Relay and Controls Instructor / Adv Relay and Controls Instructor

This position is in the Regional Workforce Development group and reports to the Supervisor,

Relays & Controls Training. The Relay Instructor will provide training to Regional Operations

employees. The primary focus for this position is the training of incumbent and incoming Relay

personnel as well as candidates enrolled through the in-house Relay training program.


Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the design, development, and implementation activities of effective training materials and programs.
  • Delivering training in both formal classroom settings as well as field settings.
  • Coordinating and maintaining training facilities, equipment and hardware.
  • Handling administrative duties including training documentation, reports and attendance records.
  • Supporting system-wide training needs on an as-needed basis.

An employee hired at the Advanced Relay & Controls Instructor level will be expected to perform all of the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner. Further, the Advanced Relay Instructor level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those listed above, including, but not limited to:

  • Leading the design, development, and implementation activities of effective training materials and programs.
  • Mentoring associates and/or instructors through observation, providing feedback and written documentation.

Qualifications at the Relay and Controls Instructor level:

  • Associate degree in a related technical / electrical / or engineering discipline, and 4 plus years of related field experience OR 6 plus years of technical knowledge obtained through related experience is required. Related experience would include field operations work in either substation, lines or relay work in a industrial or commercial distribution environment.
  • Demonstrated skill and ability to perform at the associate distribution instructor level or previous experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating training programs.
  • Previous technical experience (T&D Skills instructors require journeyman level skill set in the Relay discipline).
  • Prior experience as a Relay instructor (classroom or on-the-job) is desirable.
  • Senior tech level skills in the area of relay crafts.
  • Must have knowledge of Relay Protective Schemes Practice Manual associated with Relay settings and testing of electro-mechanical and microprocessor Relays; knowledge of the materials and safety regulations necessary to perform Relay work and the tools and equipment used to perform this work.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of breakers, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, reclosers and other equipment functions and operating characteristics.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of electrical theory principals and laws for alternating and direct current.
  • Must be able to interpret blueprints, drawings, technical manuals and construction standards.
  • Must have the ability to interpret protective schemes, utilize test equipment for the setting of relay characteristics, interpret results, troubleshoot techniques on equipment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience performing as an instructor (classroom or on-the-job).
  • Use the various computer systems available to test relays in the field, along with providing documentation on those devices.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, customer relations skills along with strong coaching and mentoring skills are a must.

Qualifications at the Adv Relay and Controls Instructor level include all of the above, plus:

  • Associate degree in an related technical / electrical / or engineering discipline and 6 plus years of related field experience OR 8 plus years of technical knowledge obtained through related experience is required. Related experience would include field operations work in either substation, lines or relay work in a industrial or commercial distribution environment.
  • Workforce Development approved Instructor Certification in the Relay discipline OR Relay Tech Senior or Above,& prior experience developing training materials.
  • Journeyman level work skills with training experience (classroom or on-the-job).

NOTE- Position does require travel across the supported FirstEnergy footprint of 25-50%
